Dental crowns are artificial teeth that are either fixed over an implant or cemented over a fractured or decaying tooth. The implanting procedure can take a few months to be over. However, if the tooth is not entirely missing, a same-day dental crown can be fixed on it.

Advancements in dental technology have made this procedure extremely easy, taking only a few hours. The procedure is known as CEREC or Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics.

The process

The entire process can be summarized in four steps.

Step 1: We would take a digital image of the existing tooth so that an exact replica can be made. A special CEREC camera is used to take a 3D digital image of the tooth. The structure of the crown is designed in the computer after this image has been taken.

Step 2: The cracked, chipped, or decayed tooth is leveled to make the base for fitting the dental crown on top of it.

Step 3: Meanwhile, the crown is automatically created within a CEREC apparatus. Sturdy porcelain is used as a material and is ready within 15 minutes.  Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) is used to develop the crown.

Step 4: The newly-made crown is polished to match the appearance of your teeth. Then, it is fitted on top of the level tooth.

Advantages of a CEREC crown

The CEREC procedure has been around for almost 30 years and has been proven as a highly effective cosmetic dentistry application. These crowns tend to be very durable and resist abrasion. This ensures that you do not have to run to the dentist again to repair a broken crown. However, if the fracture of the original tooth exists below the gum line, a CEREC crown may not be a durable alternative. Visit our premises so that we can suggest the best options for you.

That said, the appearance of a CEREC crown is aesthetically pleasing. In fact, if you don’t tell anyone that you have a crown, it is practically impossible to distinguish it from the original tooth. Since it does not have a dark core, it facilitates a full reflection of light, furthermore enhancing the aesthetics of this dental procedure.

Compared to traditional crowns

CEREC crowns have several advantages over traditional crowns. First of all, it saves you a lot of time because fitting a traditional crown can take weeks to be complete. It is also considered more affordable since you don’t have to visit your dentist more than once. You can regain the biting power of your broken tooth immediately. With traditional crowns, you will need to have a temporary crown made of resin. This temporary attachment tends to come off, and there is always the risk of food particles getting trapped below it.

Contrary to popular belief, CEREC crowns are not complicated at all. It is an extremely easy process in the safe hands of our experienced dentists. Since CEREC crowns are designed digitally based on an actual image of your teeth, they are made to size and fit extremely well. To get your CEREC crown, schedule an appointment with us today.
